Members of the Cathedral Ringing
Society, (left), pulling ropes of a new set of bells, (right),
at Old Post Office in Washington yesterday after rededication
ceremony. The 10 bells, a gift from the Ditchley Foundation of
Britain, were rung for 45 minutes after a BBC radio broadcast
transmitted to the ceremony the pealing of the Westminster Abbey
bells, of which the Post Office bells are copies. The gift
marked the rescue of the 84-year-old Romanesque Revival building
and the 200th anniversary of the end of the Revolutionary War.
The Ditchley bells were cast at London’s Whitechapel Bell
Foundry, which also cast the Liberty Bell. |
