Washington, D.C.—The Very Rev. Gary Hall, dean of Washington National Cathedral, has released the following statement in observance of Thanksgiving Day.
Abundance and Responsibility
“Go your way, eat the fat and drink sweet wine and send portions of them to those for whom nothing is prepared, for this day is holy to our Lord; and do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” —Nehemiah 8:10
The expression of heartfelt thanks is central to the life of the Church, where we pause to reflect on God’s generous grace and love as they appear in our lives. At the threshold of the winter holidays from Advent to Epiphany, Thanksgiving Day invites all Americans to consider our many reasons for gratitude and hope.
As we consider the talents and gifts that have been shared so richly in our lives, may we remember the strength that comes from recognizing God’s great blessings during difficult times as well. May we also not forget the responsibility that comes from our abundance, especially over the cold months ahead.
