Vigil for All Victims of Gun Violence
On the cusp of the one-year anniversary of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary, the Newtown Foundation and Washington National Cathedral hosted a vigil service of mourning and loving remembrance for all who have fallen victim to the ongoing epidemic of gun violence in America. Special guests and dignitaries, as well as people and leaders from across the country, honored the more than 30,000 Americans who have died from a gunshot since the Newtown shooting.
Singer Carole King, the World Children’s Choir, and the Hon. Eleanor Holmes Norton participated.
About the Hon. Eleanor Holmes Norton
Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, District of Columbia, preached at the Cathedral on DC Day, June 25, 2000. Among her achievements in her five terms in office have been three historic breakthroughs: first, the achievement of the right to vote on the House floor; second, the first vote ever and a two-day debate on statehood for the District; and third, a historic revitalization package that she steered through Congress, restructuring the financial relationship between Congress and the District. Congresswoman Norton has been named one of the 100 most important American women in one survey andone of the most powerful women in Washington in another. She is nationally known as a civil rights and a womens rights leader.
