Race and Reconciliation: A Reading, Film, and Discussion Course
Film, literature and other works of art offer rare opportunities for insight and dialogue. Sojourners Jack Pannell and the Cathedrals Canon Missioner William Barnwell lead a study of race, racism, and reconciliation through the exploration of short stories, memoirs, essays, and sermons by Maya Angelou, James Baldwin, William Faulkner, Edward P. Jones, Martin Luther King, Jr., Flannery OConner, and Alice Walker. Join us for this journey through literature, film and small group discussion and enter the promise that the more we appreciate the strengths and beauty of both white and black cultures, the more effective we will be as agents of reconciliation. The Rev. Canon Missioner William H. Barnwell oversees ministries and projects aimed at addressing the issues of poverty, public education, and social and economic justice in the city of Washington and beyond. He has taught The Bible as Literature at the University of New Orleans and served as an editor for the Education for Ministry (EFM) program. Jack J. Pannell, Jr. is the chief media strategist for Sojourners, the acclaimed magazine and national Christian social justice organization. Prior to Sojourners, he was the chief spokesman for civil rights leader Rep. John Lewis and the communications director for the DC Department of Health during the anthrax attacks in 2001. Course fee is $50 including all materials. Scholarships are available. For course information contact Linda Terrell at (202) 537-5240 or e-mail her at lterrell@cathedral.org.
