One Sky: Solving Climate Change Together
Majora Carter, K.C. Golden and Betsy Taylor
with host Eugene Sutton

Tuesday, May 20, 7:30 pm

Come hear Majora Carter, Sustainable South Bronx founder and MacArthur genius grant recipient’s powerful vision of “green for all” along with the visionary voices and pragmatic activism of K.C. Golden, a Seattle-based climate policy expert, and Betsy Taylor, chair of the 1 Sky Campaign, hosted by the Cathedral’s canon pastor the Rev. Eugene Sutton. Proceeds will benefit Greater Washington Interfaith Power and Light and the Green Cathedral initiatives.


Working with Our Enemies: Finding Freedom from Hostility and Fear
a lecture and workshop with Sharon Salzberg and Robert Thurman
Friday, June 27 lecture, 7:30 pm
Saturday, June 28 workshop, 9:30 am–4:30 pm

Two of America’s most prominent Buddhist teachers, scholar Bob Thurman and acclaimed lovingkindness meditation teacher Sharon Salzberg will tackle the mighty spiritual challenge of enemies in this combination lecture and workshop offering.

Sojourners’ Jack Pannell and the Cathedral’s Canon Missioner, William Barnwell lead a study of race, racism, and reconciliation through the exploration of short stories, memoirs, essays, and sermons.

Song as Spiritual Practice
a community sing with John Bell
Tuesday, April 8, 7 pm

In an evening of communion through music, people gathered to sing hymns and experience the possibility for renewal and reinvigoration of worship through song, with John Bell, innovative composer and musician from the Iona Community in Scotland. Event was free and open to the public


Traces of the Trade: A Story from the Deep North
a film by Katrina Brown
Tuesday, April 1 and Wednesday, April 8, 7 pm

In the feature documentary Traces of the Trade: A Story from the Deep North, producer/director Katrina Brown tells the story of her New England ancestors, the largest slave-trading family in U.S. history. This event was co-sponsored by the Committee on Racial Reconciliation of the Diocese of Washington. Screening was free and open to the public.


MLK’s Nonviolence: Asleep After 40 Years?

Taylor Branch, author of the trilogy America in the King Years, gave a public lecture on Martin Luther King, Jr. Lecture was free and open to the public.

James Carroll’s Constantine’s Sword
Screening and Discussion
Monday, March 10, 7 pm

James Carroll, award winning author and columnist hosted a screening and discussion of the film James Carroll’s Constantine’s Sword, a new documentary film by Oren Jacoby, which explores the roots of religiously inspired contempt and violence. This event was a Special Advance Screening in partnership with First Run Features before the national theatrical release of the film in April 2008.


Lifting the Veil on Addiction
a lecture by William Cope Moyers
Wednesday, February 20, 7 pm

From his personal experience, first made public in father Bill Moyer’s PBS series “Close to Home,” William Moyers carries the message of his spiritual recovery from drug addiction. Come into community this night to hear a true story openly told of the power of addiction, and the promise and possibility for recovery that can transform individuals and our society.

Live Interfaith Webcast Conference with Trinity Institute
Tuesday & Wednesday, January 22 & January 23, 8:30 am–4:30 pm

James Carroll, James H. Cone, Susannah Heschel, and Tariq Ramadan were available via live webcast from Trinity Wall Street, New York, as they addressed the paradox of the faithful raising prayers for peace while stories of religiously fueled violence fill the news.


Rome & Canterbury: The Elusive Search For Unity
Evensong homily by Mary Reath
January 20, 4 pm
followed by reading, book signing and reception

Mary Reath, governor of the Anglican Centre in Rome and editor of Public Lives, Private Prayers, told of the work being done to end the nearly five hundred year old divisions between the Roman Catholic and the Anglican/Episcopal Churches. Free and open to the public.
