School Programs


children with study materialsWashington National Cathedral offers curriculum-based museum education programs for elementary schools students in the Washington, DC, metropolitan area. Using hands-on experiences and discovery learning, programs emphasize art, architecture, and history. Pre-visit materials help teachers prepare students for programs, and post-visit materials reinforce field-trip learning. Cathedral educators and trained volunteers lead classroom activities and tours of the Cathedral. The content of these programs is separate from the religious mission of the Cathedral.


DC Public Schools receive free programs and free transportation to and from the Cathedral.

Program Descriptions

Stories & Symbols

Students learn about a special way the Cathedral tells stories—through art!

Grades K–5; $5 per student
Curriculum Connections

Students take an interactive tour to find stories and symbols in the Cathedral’s art. This tour features stone carvings, stained glass windows, and needlework. Hands-on activities in our crypt classroom introduce the skills used by artists and artisans to create these works of art.


People of the Past

Come face-to-face with history at the Cathedral!

Grades 1–4; $5 per student
Curriculum Connections

Students learn how the Cathedral celebrates American history. A tour of the Cathedral’s art allows students to discover the stories of such historic figures as George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Harriet Tubman, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Students interpret the historical significance of famous Americans through a hands-on activity in our crypt classroom.


Great Gothic!

Pointed arches, flying buttresses, and ribs—how and why?

Grades 5–7; $5 per student
Curriculum Connections

Students explore the Gothic architecture of Washington National Cathedral to discover how and why a building of such magnitude was created. The program offers students an opportunity to take measurements, solve equations, experiment with the force of gravity, and to apply practical math and science skills in a real world scenario.


Cathedral Adventures

An in-depth adventure in art and architecture!

Grades 3–5; $10 per student

In this program, students visit the Cathedral twice. During the first visit, students practice looking at a building through an architect’s eyes. The second visit is an introduction to several of the art forms found at the Cathedral including mosaics, stained glass, and stone carving. Hands-on activities help students consider concepts and ideas in art and architecture.
