Washington National Cathedral’s 50th Consecutive Televised Christmas Service

Washington, DC — Washington National Cathedral’s Christmas service will be televised nationally for the 50th consecutive time on Wednesday, December 25, 2002, from 9 to 10 am.

The Cathedral, located in Washington, DC, and known as the ‘National House of Prayer for All People,’ was the site of last year’s historic September 14th, National Prayer and Remembrance service.

This year’s Christmas service will feature music from the Cathedral’s great organ and the 40-voice Cathedral Choir of Boys and Men and will celebrate a festival Holy Eucharist. The sermon will be delivered by the Very Reverend Nathan D. Baxter, dean of the Cathedral; the Right Reverend John Bryson Chane, Episcopal bishop of Washington, will be the celebrant.

A great ‘church for national purposes’ was first proposed by George Washington and was included in the original planning of Washington, DC. Construction of the Cathedral, officially named the Cathedral Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, began in 1907. President Theodore Roosevelt spoke at the ground breaking. The Cathedral was completed in 1990.
