VIRGINIA CELEBRATED ON OCTOBER 21ST

Dr. Francis Collins, Virginia Native and
Director of Human Genome Research Institute
to Speak before Service

What: As part of its ongoing Centennial celebration observances and state day program, the Cathedral will host a major worship of celebration in recognition of the people and leaders of Virginia.

When: Sunday, October 21—service begins at 11:15 am; Sunday Forum discussion featuring Dr. Francis Collins is scheduled from 10–10:50 am.

Where: Washington National Cathedral, Wisconsin Avenue & Massachusetts Avenue, N.W., Washington, D.C., 20016

Virginia—whose ties to the Cathedral are long—was chosen as the first state to be honored during the Cathedral’s Centennial year celebration. The Cathedral will also join in celebrating the 400th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown, the first successful English settlement in America.

Dr. Francis Collins, a native Virginian who is one of the nation’s leading geneticists, will be spotlighted in the Cathedral’s new Sunday Forum program which features guests from across the spectrum of theology, politics, science, justice issue and the arts. Cathedral Dean Sam Lloyd will host the discussions.

Clergy from throughout Virginia are expected to join in the celebration. Among them are the Rt. Rev. Peter James Lee of Richmond, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia; the Rt. Rev. David Colin Jones, suffragan bishop; the Rt. Rev. F. Neff Powell of Roanoke, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Southwestern Virginia; and the Rt. Rev. John Clark Buchanan of Norfolk, interim bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Virginia.

Cathedral Dean Sam Lloyd will deliver the sermon.
