DURING SMITHSONIAN FOLKLIFE FESTIVAL ON JULY 6TH

Gift Honors National Cathedral’s Centennial

What: Presentation of two crosses carved by England’s Canterbury Cathedral stonemasons during the Smithsonian Folklife Festival to their counterpart stonemasons from Washington National Cathedral. The gift honors Washington National Cathedral’s centennial which officially begins on September 29, 2007.

When: Friday, July 6 at 10:30 am

Where: National Mall, Folklife Festival, “Roots of Virginia Culture” Exhibit

Canterbury Stonemasons James Hanford and Ben Swinfield along with Canterbury Trustee Amanda Cottrell will present a gift of two crosses carved during the festival as part of the “Roots of Virginia Culture” program to Washington National Cathedral Stonemasons Joe Alsonso, Andy Uhl and Sean Callahan. Cathedral Vicar Steve Huber will accept the gift on behalf of Washington National Cathedral.

The crosses are carved from blocks of Indiana limestone that were once part of the 150,000-ton Washington National Cathedral. One cross will be inscribed “Kent” and the other “Virginia,” symbolizing the strength of the relationship between the two communities.

Hanford and Swinfield are two of 40 Kentish participants in the “Roots of Virginia Culture” at the festival.
