WASHINGTON—Bruce Sanford, partner in the Washington law office of Baker & Hostetler LLP and long-time supporter of Washington National Cathedral, has been elected President of the National Cathedral Association’s Board of Trustees.

Mr. Sanford’s three-year term begins in September 2002.

The Very Rev. Nathan D. Baxter, dean of Washington National Cathedral, was enthusiastic about Mr. Sanford’s leadership, saying “Bruce’s dedication to the mission of the Cathedral and the National Cathedral Association is extraordinary. We are thrilled that he has been elected to lead the Board of the National Cathedral Association.”

The President of the NCA Board is responsible for building and broadening the association’s national membership, expanding its programs, and fostering the growth of its network of more than 125 regional volunteer leaders nationwide. He will lead a 32-person Board of Trustees that hails from across the nation. In addition, the President is a member of the Cathedral Chapter, the governing body of the Cathedral.

The National Cathedral Association is an organization of 13,000 men and women from all over the country who support and promote the work of the Cathedral. Ray Foote, director of the association, said “Bruce takes the helm of an organization that was born in the 19th century, grew nationally throughout the 20th century, and today makes the Cathedral relevant to 21st-century Americans of many faiths. His leadership will expand the NCA’s horizons in service to this national house of prayer for all people.”

A prominent First Amendment lawyer, Mr. Sanford has been termed one of the most accomplished press lawyers in the national by the American Journalism Review and as one of the 100 most influential lawyers in America by The National Law Journal. The Washingtonian magazine named him one of “The 50 Best Lawyers in Washington” in 1997. The author of the best-selling trade book “Don’t Shoot the Messenger: How Our Growing Hatred of the Media Threatens Free Speech for All of Us,” Mr. Sanford is the father of three children and lives in Washington, D.C. with his wife Marilou.

Mr. Sanford is a cum laude graduate of Hamilton College, and he earned his Juris Doctor degree from New York University’s School of Law. Presently, he is a charter Trustee and Chairman of the Board of the Thomas Jefferson Center for the Protection of Free Expression at the University of Virginia and a Trustee and member of the Executive Committee of the National Symphony Orchestra of The John F.
