FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 17, 2004 Kings College Choir to perform Christmas Concert at Washington National Cathedral Kings College Choir of Cambridge, internationally renowned for its annual television and radio broadcasts of the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, will perform a Christmas concert at the Washington National Cathedral on Saturday, Dec. 18, at 7:30 pm. The choir, comprising 16 boys and 14 men, will perform selections that span from the 12th century Latin text of O Come, O Come, Emmanuel, to the recently commissioned The Three Kings by Jonathan Dove. Seasonal favorites by Ralph Vaughn Williams and Benjamin Britten will also highlight the concert. Recognized worldwide as the pre-eminent representative of the great British church music tradition, the choir owes its existence to King Henry VI who envisaged the daily singing of services in his chapel. This remains the choir's purpose, and is an important part of the lives of its 16 choristers, who are educated on generous scholarships at King's College School, and the 14 choral scholars and two organ scholars, who study a variety of subjects in the College itself. Tickets, ranging from $20 to $60, can be purchased online at www.music.cathedral.org or by calling 537-5757. The concert is the second of three concerts presented by the Music Department of the Washington National Cathedral as part of its 2004-2005 season. The third will feature the combined choirs of the Cathedral performing J.S. Bachs St. John Passion on Palm Sunday, March 20, 2005 at 4:00 pm. # # # Office of Public Affairs |
