IRANIAN CYCLISTS FOR PEACE WASHINGTON, D.C. – Fourteen bicyclists from Iran who are criss-crossing the United States with a message of peace will make their final U.S. stop at the Cathedral on Wednesday, July 11th. Bishop John Bryson Chane is scheduled to greet the women and men who comprise the “Miles for Peace” group at 3:15 pm on the steps of the Cathedral’s west end (Wisconsin Avenue side). The “Miles for Peace” program is a non-profit, non-governmental peace campaign whose objective is to convey the message of peace, friendship and peaceful co-existence with all nations. John Peterson, the Cathedral’s director of the Center for Global Justice and Reconciliation, called the visit another positive event in U.S.-Iran relations. “We are delighted that the ‘Miles for Peace’ cyclists will be visiting the Cathedral. In our U.S.-Iran program, we are continually trying to create opportunities for Americans and Iranians to meet each other in meaningful ways, so we can begin to heal and bridge what divides us.” After leaving the U.S., the cyclists plan to bike across Italy, France, Germany and the United Kingdom, carrying the same message of peace. The U.S.-Iran program of the Cathedral’s Center for Global Justice and Reconciliation promotes reconciliation between the two countries through inter-religious dialogue and cross-cultural relationship building.
