JAMES FORBES, JR. TO PREACH FROM HISTORIC PULPIT

Prominent Guest Preachers Share their Voices
throughout Washington National Cathedral’s Centennial Year

WASHINGTON – The second sermon in the Cathedral’s Celebration of American Preaching series takes place this Sunday morning with rousing words from internationally acclaimed homilist, the Rev. Dr. James A. Forbes, Jr.

Dr. Forbes is distinguished Senior Minister Emeritus of The Riverside Church located in New York City, an interdenominational church built by John D. Rockefeller in 1927.

Both Newsweek and Ebony magazines recognized him as one of the most effective preachers in America. He is the first African-American to serve as Senior Minister of Riverside’s multicultural congregation. In August 2004, Dr. Forbes addressed the Democratic National Convention.

Each month during the Cathedral’s centennial year at an 11:15 am worship service, prominent guest speakers share their voice and vision from the Cathedral’s historic Canterbury pulpit, the place where the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his last Sunday sermon.

The final 2007 preacher in the series is Bishop William H. Willimon scheduled for December 9.

Guests for 2008 include Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie (January 20), the Rt. Rev. Steven Charleston (February 24), the Rev. Fleming Rutledge (March 9), the Rev. Professor Peter J. Gomes (May 4), Dr. Thomas G. Long (June 1) and Sister Joan D. Chittister, (June 22).
