WASHINGTON NATIONAL CATHEDRAL’S CENTENNIAL FLOWER MART
MIXES TRADITION WITH NEWNESS, HONORS THE REPUBLIC OF SOUTH AFRICA

(Online Press Kit)

WASHINGTON – Flower Mart 2008 continues its tradition of being Washingtons premier family festival of fun and flowers while saluting first-time country honoree, the Republic of South Africa.

Dates and times of the festival are Friday, May 2, 10 am–6pm, and Saturday, May 3, 10 am–5 pm. This year’s festival is part of a year-long centennial celebration, as the Cathedral turned 100 on September 29, 2007.

The 69th annual benefit for the gardens and woodlands of Washington National Cathedral is sponsored by All Hallows Guild, a volunteer organization serving as stewards of the 57-acre grounds.

Flower Mart encircles Washington National Cathedral with its tents, children’s activities, and vendors—flowers, plants, herbs, food, music, dancers, specialty boutique items, puppet shows, rides, educational programs and All Hallows Guild’s fully-restored, century-old carousel.

The South African Embassy will host a tent that offers festival goers information on the history and culture of the country, and Ambassador to the United States Welile Nhlapo will serve as the Honorary Chairman of Flower Mart 2008.

“Flowers Around the World,” an array of floral arrangements created by numerous embassies, will also be displayed in the main part of the Cathedral.

In addition to celebrating nearly seventy years of flower mart, this year’s flower mart will honor the Cathedral’s centennial. Mrs. Arthur H. Page IV is chairperson.
