FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Steven M Gotfried Canon Elton O. Smith, Jr. To Leave Washington National Cathedral The Rev. Canon Elton O. Smith, Jr. has announced he will resign from Washington National Cathedral, effective June 30, 2003, to accept the position of Interim Rector of Grace Church in Georgetown, Washington, D.C. Canon Smith joined the Cathedral in March 1994 after serving as Dean of St Pauls Cathedral in Buffalo, New York for 26 years. He has served Washington National Cathedral in a variety of capacities, including Canon Vicar, Executive Director for Program and Ministry, Interim Director of Development and, most recently, Special Assistant to the Dean. Throughout his tenure, he has participated in the liturgical life of the Cathedral. Since September 2001, Canon Smith has served as a part-time consultant to the Department of Membership & Development, the Cathedrals fundraising and friend-making office. Specializing in developing major and planned gifts, he has cultivated relationships with hundreds of current and prospective donors and has written a column in each issue of the Cathedral Founders Society newsletter to communicate directly with individuals interested in planned giving arrangements. A former Chairman of the North American Deans Conference, Canon Smith has often represented Washington National Cathedral at the Conferences annual meetings. He will continue to serve as a volunteer member of the Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral Association through August.
