Animals from Various States Looking for Homes Gather at the Cathedral
New Mobile Pet Adoption Center Featured

Public Invited to Bring their Companion Animals
to annual Blessing of the Animals
& Support Pet Toy Drive

What: Blessing of the Animals

When: Wednesday, October 4, 2006

Beginning at 4:45 pm, dogs from overburdened shelters from neighboring states and New Orleans, obtained through the Washington Animal Rescue League’s Shelter Animal Relief Effort (ShARE), will be on the grounds along with a spokesperson; Washington Humane Society (WHS) representatives and animals, along with their new mobile adoption pet center, will also be on the grounds. The public is asked to support a pet toy drive by WARL. The animal welfare organization is looking for new hard, plastic toys or balls for dogs and crinkle balls or pom-poms for cats.

The Blessing by Cathedral clergy starts at 6:15 pm. The public and their companion animals are welcome.

Where: Washington National Cathedral, Walker Court and west front steps (Wisconsin Avenue side), Wisconsin and Massachusetts Avenues NW.

Details: In celebration of the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals, Washington National Cathedral will hold its annual Blessing of the Animals. Spokespersons from WARL and WHS can provide details on their ongoing efforts to serve homeless, lost and abused animals. WHS will show their new mobile adoption pet center to the public. The service, held in the Walker Court, will include a brief prayer and sprinkling of pets with water with a blessing.
