CELEBRATION OF AMERICAN PREACHING

Prominent Guest Preachers Share their Voices
throughout Washington National Cathedral’s Centennial Year

WASHINGTON – Each month during the Cathedral’s centennial year, prominent guest speakers will share their voice and vision in worship at 11:15 am Sunday services.

The Rev. Martin B. Copenhaver begins the nine-month “Celebration of American Preaching” on October 28. An author of four books, the Rev. Copenhaver currently serves as senior pastor of Wellesley Congregational Church in Wellesley, Massachusetts.

He is a recipient of the Mersick Prize in Preaching and has had many of his sermons published in the Harper & Row “Best Sermons” series. The Rev. Copenhaver currently serves on the Board of Trustees of Andover Newton Theological School and the Board of Advisors of Yale Divinity School, his alma mater.

Other preachers this year include the Rev. Dr. James A. Forbes, Jr. (November 25) and Bishop William H. Willimon (December 9).

The 2008 guests are Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie (January 20), the Rt. Rev. Steven Charleston (February 24), the Rev. Fleming Rutledge (March 9), the Rev. Professor Peter J. Gomes (May 4), Dr. Thomas G. Long (June 1) and Sister Joan D. Chittister, (June 22).
