WASHINGTON, D.C. — On October 29, panelists from the U.S. and Iran will discuss what lies behind the antagonism between the two countries as well as solutions for moving forward.

Moderated by Congressman Wayne T. Gilchrist (R-MD), the talk will explore topics such as the grievances Americans may hold against Iran since the 1979 hostage crisis and look at Iranians’ lingering perceptions of Americans after the 1953 CIA-backed coup.

Panelists include:

  • Bruce Laingen, former Iran hostage and State Department official
  • Stephen Kinzer, former New York Times bureau chief and author of All the Shah’s Men
  • Trita Parsi, president of the National Iranian American Council and author of Treacherous Alliance: The Secret Dealings of Israel, Iran and the United States
  • Dr. Abbas Amanat, Iran scholar, professor of history at Yale University and author of In Search of Modern Iran: Authority, Nationhood and Culture

The panel discussion, which runs from 7:30–9:30 pm in the main seating area of the Cathedral, is free and open to the public. No tickets or reservations are required.
