FUTURE OF THE CHURCH IN THE 21ST CENTURY:
ACCLAIMED THINKERS GATHER AT THE CATHEDRAL
TO DISCUSS INNOVATION, TRADITION

During a three-day gathering May 10–12, 2007 at the Cathedral College of Washington National Cathedral, mainline and emergent Christians will talk about the best practices within their ministries and how these practices are addressing a new set of cultural conditions in the 21st century.

Authors, scholars and theologians—Diana Butler Bass, Michael Battle, Marcus Borg, Barbara Brown Taylor, Fred Burnham, Carmen Gurrero, Tony Jones, Phyllis Tickle, Cathedral Dean Sam Lloyd and others—will reflect on the direction the church is taking.

Drawing from Butler Bass’ latest book, Christianity for the Rest of Us, participants will share what is working in their congregations in hopes of creating networks of religious leaders across traditional divides of mainline and emergent, evangelical and progressive to make common cause in renewing churches. Worship, prayer and music will be shared, creating a holy space in which real dialogue can take place.

“The Cathedral College wants to be a convening place for on-going strategies and partnerships so religious leaders can effectively guide their congregations in the 21st century. We hope to be both a think tank for the sharing of new ideas for congregational vitality and a ‘practice tank’ where what is working can be shared on an ongoing basis,” said the Rev. Canon Howard Anderson, warden and president of the Cathedral College.

Conversations on best practices in Latino/Hispanic and African American ministries, the New Monasticism and Emergent Communities are also on the agenda.

For further information about the conference and registration, e-mail cathedralcollege@cathedral.org or telephone (202) 537-2221. The registration fee is $250 and includes Thursday dinner and Friday lunch. See conference information on the website.

The conference is underwritten in part by a grant from Trinity Grants Program, Trinity Church Wall Street. Other sponsors include St. Albans Episcopal Church, Wesley Theological Seminary, Harper San Francisco and Alban Institute.
