Mendelssohn’s oratorio tells the intensely dramatic story of the Old Testament prophet Elijah through scenes from his life. The music builds in part on the work of Mendelssohn’s baroque predecessors, Bach and Handel, but the style also marks Mendelssohn’s own emergence as an early romantic composer. Nmon Ford, Elijah; Kelley Nassief, soprano; Jennifer Hines, mezzo soprano; Benjamin Butterfield, tenor, Nicholas Bairatchnyi, treble. Tickets: $20–$80.

Free pre-concert discussion: The discussion will focus on the importance of the prophet Elijah to the three Abrahamic faiths. Panelists include Imam Yahya Hendi, Muslim chaplain at Georgetown University, Rabbi Saltzman of Beit Chaverim in Prince Frederick, Maryland and the Reverend Richard J. Jones, professor of Mission and World Religions at Virginia Theological Seminary. The Rev. Canon Stephen Huber, vicar of Washington National Cathedral, will moderate the discussion. June and July, 2008

The Cathedral has decided not to host a Summer Music Festival this summer. Please join us for exciting musical offerings in June and July including programs in the Centennial Organ Recital series, the Independence Day Organ Recital with Cathedral organists Scott Dettra and Christopher Jacobson and the YouthCue concert (details coming soon).

Organ Recitals and Organ Demonstrations

See information on organ recitals, played on the Cathedral’s Great Organ on select Sundays throughout the year at 5 pm, immediately following Evensong. Starting September 30, 2007, as part of the celebration of the Cathedral’s Centennial, we will present many of the world’s finest organists in a special Centennial Organ Recital Series. Read also about organ demonstrations on Mondays and Wednesdays, except holidays, from 12:30 to 1 pm, in which a Cathedral organist gives a short talk abut the organ, followed by a mini-recital. Read more about the exciting new organ project.

Carillon Recitals

Recitals on the Cathedral’s Carillon are played on Saturdays, 12:30—1:15 pm, with the exception of Holy Saturday before Easter, and feature Cathedral Carillonneur Edward M. Nassor. The carillon is best heard from the Bishop’s Garden.

Change Ringing (Peal Bells)

The Washington Ringing Society performs the art of change ringing on the Cathedral’s Peal Bells, located in the Central Tower, every Sunday after the 11 am service (approximately 12:30 pm) and rehearses on Tuesday evenings from 7 to 9 pm. The peal bells are also best heard from the Bishop’s Garden.
