The Procession to
the Tomb, mural painted by Jan Henrik DeRosen (Chapel of St. Joseph of
Arimathea)
Following Jesus unusually quick death on the cross, Joseph of
Arimathea, who had a freshly hewn tomb, sought permission to bury the
body. The mural in St. Josephs Chapel depicts the procession to the
tomb. Using Cathedral choristers and employees as models, Jan Henrik
DeRosen painted on the dry plaster using just four colors: black, white,
gold, and red. Standing above the entrance to the columbarium at the
rear of St. Josephs Chapel is a deep bas relief of the angel outside
the empty tomb. St. Pauls quotation of the powerful taunt resound
quietly: Where, o death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your
sting? (1 Cor. 15:55).
